The Presentation Designer works to advance HHMI’s communication capability, reputation, and brand by designing, editing, and facilitating the delivery of PowerPoint presentations and related materials. As a member of HHMI’s Communications team, the Presentation Designer reports to the Manager of Digital and Creative and actively contributes to the development and execution of presentations and the foundational assets (photography, video, graphics) used in them. The Presentation Designer collaborates closely with Communications team members and a variety of HHMI staff to support a defined and shared vision of strategic communication goals.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • At the request of senior leaders, and with strategic guidance from Communications staff, design and edit customized PowerPoint (PPT) presentations, including board presentations, speeches, town halls and other needs;
  • Create custom-style PPT templates for new presentations, update existing templates, and maintain and provide a central stock of standard templates;
  • Collaborate with Communications colleagues and other staff to develop ideas to transform text presentations into graphically engaging, concise and interactive experiences;
    Translate data and perspectives into effective infographics and charts;
  • Ensure PPT presentations are created to a high standard of quality — upholding brand and style guidelines; proofing for accuracy, spelling and grammar; meeting presentation specifications; and incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion considerations;
  • Facilitate presentation delivery for senior leaders (run technical tests with AV team, ensure formatting and specifications are met for each presentation, etc.);
  • Facilitate communication and/or sharing of presentations on internal and external HHMI channels for key audiences, in partnership with Communications team members;
  • Manage and prioritize a variety of presentation projects simultaneously, including periods of high volume, quick turnaround requests, and multiple rounds of revision;
  • Engage with multiple stakeholders, building relationships, demonstrating responsiveness, anticipating needs, and serving as a resource for slide presentation best practices and support;
  • Evaluate effectiveness of presentations, seeking feedback, incorporating lessons learned, developing an understanding of consistent strategic needs, and capturing and maintaining knowledge for the benefit of the entire Communications team;
  • Track and maintain final presentations in centralized locations for sharing among colleagues as needed;
  • Collaboratively contribute to integrated approaches to internal and external content, identifying and acting on opportunities to bring greater consistency and clarity to HHMI’s written and visual brand;
  • Identify, resource, develop and maintain digital assets (photos, video, illustration) for use in presentations; ensure appropriate copyright management of newly acquired assets, managing permissions and legal usage;
  • Contribute to ongoing administration of Cumulus digital asset management system used to organize, store, tag, and archive assets; and
  • Coordinate photo and video sessions as needed.


  • 2+ years of prior in-house presentation design experience supporting senior leaders
  • Demonstrable experience with data visualization, infographics, and layout design
  • Strong portfolio showcasing high-end presentation design skills and a clean design aesthetic


  • A bachelor’s degree (strong preference toward graphic design, communication arts, or similar field of study)

Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent working knowledge of PowerPoint; familiarity with Keynote a plus;
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, including the ability to create charts and graphs with data in Excel;
  • Excellent working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator); ability to work with photo and video software for routine tasks, such as creating gifs, editing video snippets, and embedding these and other assets into presentations;
  • Demonstrated proficiency with visual design and effective presentation practices, evidence of a good artistic eye and an understanding of the creative requirements inherent in compelling presentations; ability to grasp abstract concepts and to simplify and communicate them graphically;
  • Strong portfolio showcasing high-end presentation design skills and a clean design aesthetic
    Ability to work within a Cumulus digital management system – for example, organizing, storing, tagging, and archiving photos;
  • A practical understanding of image research, sourcing photography, and copyright management;
  • Well organized, detail-oriented, ability to prioritize and multi-task, and superior project management skills; responsive, fast on turnarounds, and deadline-driven, with good time management skill; and
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate with others, drawing out clarity of vision.

A portfolio showcasing at least two examples of presentations for senior leaders is required.
